Hello, I'm Mari.

Your Photographer

I've loved photography for as long as I can remember — and I have my mom, Yvonne, to thank for that.

She wasn't a professional, but she was devoted to capturing life. We shot on thrifted 35mm cameras, disposables, whatever cheap digital camera we could get our hands on. What mattered wasn't the equipment — it was the instinct to hold onto moments. That was her gift to me, and I've carried it ever since.

I remember watching Where the Heart Is with Natalie Portman and being completely transfixed — the moment the she finds an old 120mm camera, enters her post-tornado photograph into a competition, and eventually goes on to photograph weddings. Something about that stayed with me. The idea that a single image could hold that much weight — and that photography could become a life.

By middle school, I was taking photography seriously. And when I got to community college, my love for traditional black and white work led me straight to the darkroom. That's where everything deepened — the patience the process demands, the way an image slowly appears on paper. It taught me to be intentional.

That intention still shapes everything I shoot today. My work is cinematic and documentary at heart — I photograph children growing into themselves, families in their most honest moments, and the landscapes of New England that remind me why I picked up a camera in the first place. And now, I'm bringing that same eye to weddings — honoring the moments that matter most on one of the most meaningful days of your life.

I'm based in Haverhill, MA, and I travel throughout New England and beyond. My studio, Beyond the Val, is named for my family and for the idea of the horizon — what lies just past the edge of the frame, always worth chasing.

If you want images that feel like you — I'd love to work together.

My approach

While I work with poses, I don't show up with a shot list. I show up with my eyes open. My job is to follow the moment — to stay close enough to catch what's real without getting in the way of it. The in-between moments are where everything lives: the laugh before the pose settles, the quiet look between two people, the child who forgot anyone was watching. Those are the frames I'm after.

I'm not here to direct your life. I'm here to document it.

Testimonials

"From the moment we booked, Mari made us feel like she genuinely cared about our story. On the day, she was quiet and present — we almost forgot she was there. Then we saw the gallery and couldn't believe she'd caught all of it. These photos are us."

Andrea & Lucas

"I was nervous in front of a camera my whole life. Mari changed that. She never directed us, never made it feel like a shoot, she just followed us around and somehow turned an ordinary afternoon into something I want to hang on every wall."

Mark & Jessica

"I've looked at these photos more times than I can count. There's one where my daughter is laughing at something only she found funny, and I have no memory of that moment happening. But there it is. That's what Mari does, she finds the real ones."
